Xerox Printer C235 — Recover Username and Password (Free of charge)

Introduction
Let me start by saying this: I apologize for the extra reading, but there’s a prelude I need to share before diving into the main topic.

What made me write this post is a bit of a technological misadventure. I purchased a Xerox C235 from Worten, and much to my surprise, the default username and password from Xerox weren’t functioning. Was the device I acquired a display piece? Had someone bought it and returned it? Or was there some other mysterious reason the printer had already been pre-setup with a different username and password?

For a year, the printer just sat there, dutifully performing its tasks. After only a few prints, it dawned on me: each toner replacement set me back by 120€. Totally my oversight for not doing proper research before buying this printer. I’m not an avid printer (a nod to being eco-friendly 😏), but, shockingly, I still shelled out 380€ on toners in a single year. It was this revelation that spurred me to finally dive into the printer’s additional features.

After going through multiple Xerox posts, trying factory resets, and even attempting manual firmware updates — all in vain, I finally reached out to Xerox’s support in Portugal. After a rather lengthy conversation and them insisting I email my invoice for verification, I was met with an unexpected twist: I was asked to PAY for password recovery (A year has passed, so no guarantee). Despite my insistence that I had never altered the default login credentials, Xerox Portugal’s response was firm: pay or stay locked out.

Well, my response? Challenge accepted.

How to Recover Password:

  1. Check your IP on printer

2. On your computer/mobile, go to the URL: http://ip_printer/

3. Click on ‘Device’ and scroll down to the bottom

4. Click on ‘Maintenance’

5. Click on ‘Sanitize all information on nonvolatile memory’ and select “Start initial setup wizard”

6. Click on ‘start’ and patiently wait for your printer to reboot. (Important: DO NOT POWER OFF YOUR PRINTER during this process.)

7. Once your printer restarts, follow the on-screen setup instructions. You’ll be prompted to set a new password. (Tip: I used the recommended app for setup after scanning the provided QR code.)

8. Voilà! You’ve recovered your username and password!

Extra Note

If sanitising the memory doesn’t yield results for you, consider doing a factory reset and then follow the steps outlined in this guide.

Conclusion

To wrap things up, my experience with Xerox has been less than stellar. I’m genuinely taken aback by their approach. It’s disheartening to encounter a major company expecting its customers to pay for a username/password recovery. It felt less like genuine support and more like a veiled cash grab. This kind of behavior is why dominant companies start to lose their grip on the market. As people innovate and adapt, some businesses remain complacent until another competitor surpasses them — or more accurately, they outpace themselves.

So, to companies with such practices, I say: Enjoy your direct flight to Nowhereville! It’s free of charge, like this information to your customers!
